Martin County land and farms offer great opportunities for sites for new businesses or relocating existing businesses, development or finding a great place to hunt and fish. The 462-square-mile county is home to a population of 23,000. Land in Martin County has convenient access to major transportation corridors including US Highway 64, which intersects a short distance west of the county with I-95 and with US Highway 17 that cuts through the county seat in Williamston. Located in the Coastal Plain, farms include 141,000 acres, and 75% of agricultural sales are from crops. Cropland accounts for 75% of the acreage, and woodlands are left intact with 22%. Manufacturing is the major private employment sector including companies such as Ann’s House of Nuts Inc., Industrial Co., Domtar and Parkdale America LLC. The Roanoke River meanders its way through the county, and the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge is about 3 miles north of Williamston. The river and assortment of streams are favorite fishing spots where fishermen catch a variety of species including walleye, crappie and largemouth bass. Hunters like the area because of its populations of deer and turkeys. Fort Branch and its museum are frequented by visitors with a hankering to learn about the Civil War site. Senator Bob Martin Ag Center draws many large events including horse shows, concerts and large meetings. Public education for K-12 is provided by Martin County School District, and higher education is offered at Martin County Community Center.
