The nearby town of Edenton has a beautiful waterfront district and has been called "the South's prettiest small town," Edenton is a historic gem and was the first capital of Colonial North Carolina and is the state's second-oldest town. History seeps through the walls of centuries-old homes and churches, whispering tales from its past. Its beauty seems unchanged by time.

In 1665, King Charles II included the land as part of an extensive grant to eight of his loyal supporters, called Lords Proprietors. The area was first surveyed in 1712. Settlers called the coastal area Towne on Queen Anne's Creek, which evolved into Ye Towne on Mattercommack Creek and the Port of Roanoke. In 1722, the town officially was incorporated and named in honor of Charles Eden, proprietary governor from 1714-22.

Eden pardoned Blackbeard and reportedly presided over the pirate's marriage to a local woman. He was charged with profiting from Blackbeard's crimes and exonerated. Eden, who died in 1722 of yellow fever, is buried in the graveyard of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Edenton is noted for its historic district with more than 170 dwellings from the 18th and 19th centuries. It has three National Historic Landmarks - the Cupola House, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary; its 1767 Chowan County Courthouse; and Hayes Plantation. The town is in Chowan County, the smallest geographically of North Carolina's 100 counties.
