Bertie County Lands and Farms

Bertie County land and farms offer fertile uplands, lowlands and pocosin, making it ideal for agriculture, timber and hunting. With a population of 19,000 and spanning 741 square miles, Bertie County land includes 148,000 acres of farm land of which 76% is used for crops and livestock and 21% for woodlands. Livestock and poultry are major contributors to the county’s economic base. Among the county’s top employers are Perdue Products, Bertie County Board of Education, NC Department of Public Safety and QSI. Located in the Coastal Plain, it often is referred to as part of the Inner Banks by real estate developers who are luring retirees and second home buyers to the area. The Sans Soucie Ferry, historic Hope Plantation, Livermon Park and Zoo and the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge, which boasts the largest concentration of wild turkeys in North Carolina, are all located here. Some farmers convert crop land into duck impoundments in the fall, while others prefer hunting wild hogs, deer, bear, quail, dove and grouse. Fishermen enjoy catching perch, crappie, striped bass, gar, largemouth bass, bream and more in the county’s more than 50 streams and waterways that include the Roanoke and Cashie rivers. Bertie County Schools provides public education for K-12, and Martin Community College opens the door to higher learning.
