Rockingham County lands and farms offer investors, developers, start-up businesses and those wanting to relocate existing companies a great rural lifestyle with a skilled workforce. Situated on the border with Virginia, land in Rockingham County also is bordered by the North Carolina counties of Guilford, Alamance, Caswell, Forsyth and Stokes counties. The 573-square-mile county is in the Piedmont Triad region and has 91,000 residents. Manufacturing and trade form a major segment of the local economy. Among the top private employers are Wal-Mart Associates, Unifi Manufacturing Inc., MolsonCoors LLC, Keystone Foods LLC, Spinning Mills Inc. and Gildan Activewear. Farming claims 124,613 acres of which 41% is for croplands and 35% is in woodlands. Livestock and poultry account for 75% of agricultural sales. The area is rich in natural resources that outdoorsmen enjoy. Hunters revel in shooting deer and turkeys. Fishermen snag bass, crappie and catfish from area waterways including the Dan and Haw rivers as well as many creeks. Golfers can tee off at one of 10 golf courses, and visitors enjoy the five vineyards and wineries. Historic sites include the Wright Tavern built in 1816 and Troublesome Creek Ironworks, a Revolutionary War facility. Rockingham County Schools provides K-12 public education, and Rockingham Community College opens the door to higher learning.
